[There are two stools in the middle of the stage. A teenage girl, Alice, sits on one stool with a mirror in her hand. She looks at herself in a confused, serious manner, observing her facial expressions. She speaks to the mirror, not aware of the audience.]
ALICE: You are possibly the most useless thing in the world. Every secret you tell is a lie. When I look at you, Cindy says that I'm supposed to see myself, but I never do. I see something that is false. Cindy doesn't know anything anyway. [Places the mirror on the other stool.] Sometimes I wonder, about, well…I wonder about a lot of things. But I wonder if Cindy ever wonders. She seems so sure of herself, but how can she act like that? She doesn't seem to ever question, wonder, or think about things. She just assumes she knows everything, when she actually knows nothing more than you do.
[Enter Cindy, Alice's mother, anxiously, holding a card and a cordless telephone.]
CINDY: Alice, honey, are you talking
:Just Warming Up:Characters: JULIE, WILLIAM, WAITER (or WAITRESS), MIKE
JULIE: [Looks at watch impatiently] Where is he?
WAITER: Hello, ma'am. Do you care to order now? Or will you wait for William Winny? [Voice goes from low to high] Will you wait for William Winny? [Voice goes from high to low] Will you wait for William Winny? [Coughs] Excuse me, I think something's wrong with my throat.
JULIE: I think I'll wait for William, thank you. I do hope he gets here soon.
JULIE: Excuse me?
WAITER: [Shrugs] Ma made me go moo. Sorry. I'll come back later.
[Enter William the instant the Waiter leaves]
JULIE: There you are!
WILLIAM: Sorry for keeping you.
JULIE: What were you doing?
